Not Feeling So Super? Guys Check out These Super Foods That Are Just For You!

superfood-broccoli-benefits

As men we all want to be super. Super to our partners, super to our kids, super on the job. So what happens when we start to lose a little of that edge? As a man I know I’m always looking for an edge to get me through my day, to feel better, and to improve my health. One of the best ways to get that edge is through nutrition. What we eat can make or break our day. It can make the difference in our performance on the job and our happiness in our lives. So what are you doing to keep that edge? Here are a few foods that will help you keep that edge and have you feeling healthy and happy as you take on the challenges of daily life.  Add these to your diet and your friends and family will be wondering “Who is this super man?”

Blueberries-As we age, free radicals increase in number. They damage cells, promote diseases and cause premature aging. The anti oxidants in blueberries knock the free radicals out of service. Getting a little forgetful? Those same anti oxidants keep your brain and nervous system healthy ensuring clearer thinking and focus for the best memory possible.

Broccoli-Rich with a healthy supply of iron, calcium, fiber and vitamin C, it’s good for the circulatory system, and strengthening your bones. Did I mention the anti oxidants? There they are again.  Broccoli is the top vegetable for men.

Quinoa-Never heard of it? This amazing whole grain superfood from the Andes packs a healthy dose of protein and unsaturated fats plus lots of vitamins.  Use it as a replacement for rice or pasta and serve it with your favorite meat dish.  It also tastes great!

Almonds-I can go on all day about nuts. Especially almonds. They are packed with protein and unsaturated fats and are great for the heart and digestive system. I like them as a healthy snack or even a meal replacement. Carry a bag or raw organic almonds with you throughout your day. They will keep you full and your mind off hunger.  Eat them instead of a trip to the candy machine. Also try them in the form of almond milk or almond butter.

Turkey-Were you beginning to think I was going all vegetarian on you? Nah! Turkey is a very versatile cut of meat so you can eat it throughout the week without really having the same meal twice. It contains muscle building protein, it’s high in vitamin B and amino acids and contains the cancer fighter Selenium. Just leave out the mashed potatoes and candied yams and you’ll be fine.

Green Tea-It’s good for weight loss, it fights cancer and is known to slow the development of Alzheimers. Need I say more? Drink it hot or cold and get used to carrying it with you everyday.

Ok, after reading this article if you’re not feeling super, I’ll bet your super hungry. Why don’t you grab one of these super foods and do your mind and body a favor. You will be feeling super in no time.

Eating For Energy-The Right Foods Will Make Your Day!

Vegetables and Fruits Arrangement

As we age, fatigue can become to play a factor in our daily lives. Energy fatigue can be the result of many factors such as disease, depression, stress and just everyday living.  Did you know that the types of food we put into our body can greatly effect our energy levels throughout the day? Our brains need a steady supply of nutrients and the right foods can make all the difference on whether we hit that 2pm crash or if we charge hard until our head hits the pillow at the end of the day. You want to focus on foods with a low glycemic index such as protein and fiber and avoid foods with a high glycemic index like sugar and carbs.

Here are five foods that will jumpstart your day, and keep you energized and focused for optimum production.

Eggs-A great way to start your day. Protein has a glycemic index of almost zero so it’s a great way to fuel your body for energy and it improves your mood!

Healthy Tip: Have your egg with a whole grain bagel and some lean meat.  Skip the coffee, you have enough energy to start your day.

Nuts-Nuts are rich in protein and magnesium. Magnesium plays a key role in converting sugar into energy.  Being low on magnesium can drain your energy.

Healthy Tip: Carry a bag of your favorite nuts with you throughout the day. Eat them as a snack and they will increase your energy and will also keep you full so you’re not thinking about food.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables-These are full of fiber and fiber keeps your energy steady throughout the day. They reduce the risk of fatigue and depression and will keep you hydrated throughout the day.

Healthy Tip: Have a salad for lunch. It will energize you for the rest of the day. If you’re really hungry, feel free to top it off with your favorite lean protein. Get your dressing on the side to reduce calories.

Dark Chocolate-Now we’re talking. Who said that we have to skip the good stuff? A little bit of dark chocolate can boost your energy and mood. Dark chocolate contains caffeine and a stimulant called theobromine that gives you a quick boost.

Healthy Tip: Have a few squares late in your day. Perhaps with a handful of nuts. You will finish your day strong.

Water-Hydration is key! Even mild dehydration can sap your energy.  Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Your energy will remain steady and it will decrease hunger which can reduce focus.

Healthy Tip: Carry a refillable water bottle with you. This way you can hydrate as needed. Also, replace your sodas and energy drinks with water. It will pay off in increased energy and great health.

These are only a few foods that will help with your energy. Experiment and discover what foods work best for you. Nutrition is only one way to help you increase your energy throughout the day. Don’t forget that exercise for the mind and body, proper sleep and reduced stress will also play a big role with your energy levels. I always love feedback so if you would like to share your energy tips please feel free to comment.

Spring Cleanse? Don’t forget the Cilantro!

cilantro-de

I love fresh Cilantro, or Coriander if you prefer to go by it’s other name. The flavor enhances soups, salads, sauces, just about anything. You may love the taste but are you aware of the amazing health benefits? It’s springtime and perhaps you’re thinking of a cleanse to revitalize your body after a long winter or maybe you just want to add this killer herb to your cooking regimen or your garden(it grows just about anywhere).

Here are 5 reasons you need to add Cilantro to your diet today!

Cilantro cleanses the body of heavy metals-Evidence suggests that Cilantro could be one of natures best bonding agents. Chemical compounds in cilantro actually bind to the heavy metals, loosening them from the tissues, blood and organs. Cilantro’s chemical compounds then aid to transport these harmful substances out of the body through elimination.

Cilantro aids in digestion-The oils from Cilantro aid in digestion by helping in the production of enzymes, acids and juices. It also reduces gas and eases nausea.

Eases inflammation and lowers bad cholesterol-Since these two conditions go hand in hand, Cilantro in your diet is just one more weapon to fight these conditions. It raises HDL(good cholesterol) and lowers LDL(bad cholesterol). It is also helpful in easing the inflammation symptoms brought on by arthritis.

Lowers blood sugar-Cilantro helps with insulin secretion which helps to lower blood sugar.

Strong antioxidant and immune boosting properties-Yes, another great antioxidant. Cilantro protects the cells which can ward off disease and in turn strengthen your immune system.

The benefits of cilantro are extensive and research is uncovering new benefits every day. When preparing Cilantro always make sure it’s organic and raw, unless you are adding it to soup or a warmer dish.

Here’s a great juice recipe to start your day or add to a cleanse: Heavy Metal Thunder!

3 cups of fresh organic pineapple

3 jalapeños

1 cup organic raw Cilantro

Juice or blend and enjoy!

What is a Health Coach and Why You Should Hire One

Image

Since I launched my holistic health coaching business, the biggest question that I’ve gotten is, “What is a health coach?” And “Why would I need one?” These are great questions. Well, here is my definition of a health coach and 5 reasons why you may want to hire one.

According to Wikipedia, health coaching is a process that facilitates healthy, sustainable behavior change by challenging a client to listen to their inner wisdom, identify their values, and transform their goals into action. I would add to that in saying that a health coach serves as a guide to take you where you need to go. A health coach helps you identify your goals and helps you implement a strategy to meet those goals. A health coach helps you improve your self management and to stay motivated throughout the process.

What a health coach isn’t;  A health coach does not define your goals for you or put you on a diet. A health coach is not a personal trainer. A health coach does not give medical advice and is not a medical doctor.

So now you now know what a health coach is, so do you need one? Here are 5 reasons you may want to hire a health coach.

A health coach will provide you with the support you need to make lasting changes.  Perhaps you need a little jump start to lose some weight or reduce stress in your life, but you don’t know how to do go about it.  A health coach will guide through the process to get you on track and motivate you to make lasting changes.

A health coach will serve as your guide to make small incremental changes without overwhelming you.  You have a busy life. We get it.  Change is tough.  We’re not here to turn you into a vegetarian(unless you want to be one of course). We want to help you make those healthy changes without totally disrupting your life. We offer easy to follow guidelines you can commit to.

Health coaches base their work on bio-individuality. We develop a plan tailored to your individual health challenges and goals.  You know that you have guidance tailored to your own needs and results.

Health coaches assist in evaluating all areas of your life. Many times issues such as weight loss can be symptoms of other events in your life. A health coach focuses to create balance in these areas and to create harmony which leads to a healthier and happier you.

Health coaches are certified and professionally trained to assist you in making the best choices for your health and happiness. Your doctor can’t do it all.  Health coaches are trained in over 100 dietary theories. In turn we focus on Primary Foods-career, relationships, and spirituality. And Secondary Foods-nutrition and exercise. We serve as an additional resource to your doctor’s recommendations.

So now you have the details. Is a health coach in your future?

Why not take the first step and sign up for a free health breakthrough session with me today? Together we’ll map your personalized program and get you on the right track to health and happiness. You can contact me at www.kriyaliving.com or 303-596-5952.

Technology Overload. Why Unplugging At Least Once A Day Will Make You Healthier And Happier

Image

I remember when I was growing up, my parents would yell at me for watching too much TV or talking on the phone too long. “Go outside! It’s a beautiful day!” They would say. Wow, they would be pulling their hair out in this day and age. We are uber connected in every aspect of life and it’s depriving us of relaxation and peace and it’s piling on the stress. I’m guilty. Guilty of stressing out when I can’t find my phone. Guilty of being a prick to the tech support guy when my internet connection is down. Guilty of being a technology addict. But amidst all of the online chaos, I found a way to unplug. I found peace letting go and I’m healthier and happier for it.

I know there are others out there like me. I’m here to help. Here are three ways that you can unplug from your technology addiction and you will be healthier and happier.

Just Walk Away-I love this.  Twice a day I take my dog for a walk. I get up from my laptop. I put my phone down and go for a walk.  I enjoy the fresh air, hanging with my dog and just being mindful of the world around me. It clears my head, relieves stress and re-energizes me for the rest of the day.  If you’re at work, go outside for a few minutes. Walk around the building. Go get a healthy snack. Just walk away!

Sit in Silence-Meditation has many health benefits. When you’re mind is tired, stressed and overloaded, take a few minutes to let it all go.  Sit in silence and clear your head.  Just listen to your breath and nothing else. Once again you will return to your tasks energized with a clear mind and ready to go. Here is a great link for short meditations to get you through your day.

http://www.the-guided-meditation-site.com/mindfulness-exercises.html.

Exercise-Many benefits here.  Go for a run, or a bike ride. Attend a yoga class.  Whatever your method is just do it and leave your technology behind.  You will return to your daily activities focused and stress free.

So what are your methods of unplugging?

I’m just touching the tip of the iceberg here.  Whatever your methods may be, just commit to it and you will be better for it.

Having trouble unplugging? Come see me! We will discuss what’s getting in your way and develop practices that will help you unplug.  Schedule a free consultation at www.kriyaliving.com.

If this post has been beneficial or not, I would love your feedback.

Now it’s time to go walk the dog.

Namaste Y’all!

So What’s Up Trader Joe’s?

image

I had never been to Trader Joe’s in my life until recently when they opened their first store in Denver. I’d heard great things about amazing products that are healthy and affordable. I was excited to check it out and try some new vittles.  Here’s what I came away with.

Trader Joe’s is not a health food store-Now before everyone starts berating me about this, I understand that Trader Joe’s has never marketed themselves as a health food store. So why does everyone think it’s a health food store? They do have some healthy products, but let’s be realistic here, aisle after aisle of packaged goods, organic or not, doesn’t scream healthy to me.

The store was packed and the checkout line was a mile long so I had some time to do a little investigating. I’d heard their nuts were the bomb so I went there first.  Nice, raw organic almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts. Chocolate covered, spiced, salted and unsalted, you get the picture they have a nice nut selection.  What’s next.

They had a massive frozen food section.  Tubs of organic mac & cheese, neatly packaged ethnic dishes, thai, italian, indian. It all looked pretty damn good and I’ll have to admit you couldn’t find this stuff in your regular grocery store. I started looking at the ingredients and that’s when the health question came back to me.  Lot’s of soy, canola, dyes, flavorings and things I couldn’t pronounce.  Oh wait! It’s organic! Phew! What a relief, I thought the food might not be healthy.

I moved on.  Chips and crackers. things I never eat anyway.  I didn’t bother to look at the ingredients.  I already knew.

Ah, the produce and meat section.  I found this most interesting.  They had your usual selection of organic and non-organic choices. Again with the packaging. Kale in a bag? The packages all had cool names like “Happy Cow Beef” and “Morning glory farms asparagus.”  Again, I looked closer at the packaging. Responsibly farmed, antibiotic and hormone free, cage free. I smiled, “good for you Trader Joe’s” but something was missing.  Where was the local flavor? Where exactly, did this food come from? I looked at more labels, California mainly, it seems that all the food is created at their home office. I really wanted to see something from the neighborhood.  I’ve always held the belief that the best food is closest to the source. From the local garden or farm delivered fresh and nutritious to your local store. I saw none of this and this bothered me.  Trader Joe’s needs to be more local.

My research was done. I’d shopped at Trader Joe’s and I was left wondering, “What’s up Trader Joe’s?”  I turned to the massive check out line to await the fate of my wallet.

I’m not writing this to trash Trader Joe’s in any way.  Hell, I spent $80 while I was there.  These are just mere observances and a little disappointment that I took away from my first visit.

So what do you think? Am I totally off base?  I would love to hear from the Trader Joe’s supporters and also from those of you that may agree with me.

I’m always up for a good discussion and if you’re ever interested in discussing better ways to a healthy lifestyle, why not contact me for a free health consultation.  We’ll discuss what’s bothering you.

Have a great week and namaste,

Bruce

The Beauty of a Pomegranate

fotolia_19716263_x

Did you know that the pomegranate is one of the worlds oldest fruits?  It’s revered as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life.  It originated in Persia, but I recently saw many beautiful pomegranate trees in Sedona, Arizona.  I guess they acclimate well.

Pomegranates are nutrient dense and antioxidant rich offering protection against heart disease and cancer.  But the most recent news on the pomegranate shows amazing clinical results in lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and actually cleaning out clogged arteries! Yeah, this fruit is a beauty.

Have you tried the pomegranate?  It’s a little tricky to get the seeds out but well worth the effort.  Here are simple instructions on how to seed your pomegranate along with a delicious recipe once you free these little beauties.

Seeding a Pomegranate

1. Cut the crown (protruding blossom end) off the pomegranate, removing with it some of the pale-yellow pith. Take care not to pierce the seeds within.

2. Lightly score the skin in quarters from stem to crown end.

3. Immerse the scored fruit in a large bowl of cool water and soak for 5 minutes. Holding the fruit under water, break sections apart with your fingers, separating the seeds from membrane. The seeds will sink to the bottom of the bowl.

4. Discard skin and membranes. Drain the seeds and dry on paper towels.

Grilled Chicken Breast with Goat Cheese and Pomegranate Seeds

Ingredients:

4 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts

1 pomegranate

4oz. of goat cheese

Cooking Instructions:

Brush the chicken breasts with olive oil or coconut oil.

Grill until almost cooked completely through.

Put the chicken breasts in a large glass casserole pan.

Liberally apply the pomegranate seeds over the top of the chicken breasts.

Cover with shredded goat cheese.

Heat at 350 in the oven for 5 minutes.

Serve with your favorite fresh vegetable or salad.

Sounds delicious huh?  One more benefit, pomegranates have been known to relieve and prevent depression!  How can you not be happy eating this beautiful fruit?  I encourage you to incorporate pomegranate into your diet.  There are hundreds of ways to prepare them.  Sprinkle on you salad, eat ’em by the handful and my favorite, juice ’em!  Whatever your method, enjoy these beauties today.

If you’re looking for other health tips or perhaps some nutrition advice for your health challenges why not visit me for a free health consultation at www.kriyaliving.com.  Maybe I’ll send you home with a pomegranate.

Enjoy your day and namaste,
